Wedding Photographers
from a DJ’s point of view

After years of doing countless weddings for over 25 years, we (the wedding venders) have always worked with each other to help make the evening go nice and smooth. It’s no different than the electrician working alongside the carpenter or the heating and air guy. With that being said, through the years we always run into the type of photographer that has an hourly package that they sell to the bride/groom. Which might be a great sell for the photographer, just not always a great thing for the wedding dj or the bride/groom later in the evening.

We see way too often a photographer that may start their day out very early at the bride’s home as she is getting ready and after a long day, they are tired. Granted, anyone would be, right? Here is where the problem lies. Your photographer should be there with you for the entire evening. Not coming up to you, the bride or groom, and saying “We are nearing the end of our time, is there anything else we need to get done before we leave?” Wouldn’t you want your photographer to be there for the entire day? Start to finish? We find that more often than less the photographer misses out on many specialty dances and/or interactive things that a DJ and or a band may do throughout the night and he is long gone and the bride/groom will never get that professional picture and/or the video too.

Wouldn’t you want to capture everything? If you are on a tight timetable during the night and “things do tend to not always workout according to plan”, don’t blame the entertainment when you may miss out on dance floor time. There could be other factors that may cause the said delays like: Bride/Groom was late and/or your toasts lasted 30 minutes. Let’s not forget you had 2 hours of dinner time and still wanted to go greet each of your guests and table hop. All of the above does take time, and indeed the wedding venders all try to keep you on a schedule. But if the photographers leave early and ask others to rush,  it doesn't really work well. https://www.theoriginalmrdj.com/weddings.html

Should you hire a Band or Professional Wedding DJ? A Wedding Entertainment Dilemma.

Should you hire a Band or Professional Wedding DJ? Wedding Entertainment Dilemma: The Original Mr. DJ Pro’s weigh in on the topic.

When a couple is searching for entertainment for their wedding, they are faced with a few major decisions; whether to hire a live band or DJ? Our expert Chicago Wedding DJs at The Original Mr. DJ would like to point out a few tips to help couples make the best entertainment decisions.  We will try to remain unbiased toward our own profession. There are good points for having a live band, or a DJ, and a few things to keep in mind when deciding. Sometimes couples choose to hire both a DJ and live musicians, and when your budget allows it that can be a great option. We have worked with bands and live musicians many times, and now we’d like to offer some tips based on our experience.

We'll break down each portion of a wedding, and offer pros and cons for Bands/live musicians and DJ/Emcees:

The Ceremony Music - Band OR DJ?

THE PRO’S: A band offers a live version of songs chosen by the couple or based on a theme designed by the couple that the band follows. It certainly offers a nice “look” and “feel” when you have a guitarist, a violinist & cellist, or a saxophonist , harpist, and/or flutist playing the prelude and ceremony music. The live musicians offer a wow factor and it looks great in pictures.  The sound they provide, when they’re really good, is hard to compare with pre-recorded music, it’s just much more intimate and personal.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND: If you aren't getting married in a Church, and your venue does not have its own PA system, you will still need someone to run the microphone sound levels for the officiant and vows to be heard.  When we consult with clients, the number one complaint we hear with regard to Ceremonies is “we couldn't hear the vows”.  If the band offers a PA for your officiant and vows, make sure they will personally control the sound and not simply set it and forget it.  Some people speak more softly than others and the person controlling the sound can adjust for this. Our professional Chicago DJs meet with the officiant just prior to the ceremony to make sure they understand the proper use of the mic and what to do in the case of an equipment failure…make sure your DJ or Band does this to avoid any problems which could ruin your Ceremony.  If the Band doesn't have a PA system for the officiant and vows, you may need a DJ to provide the Ceremony sound system, which is usually an additional cost…If your budget is a concern, remember that the DJ can provide the sound support for the ceremony as well as play all of your prelude and ceremony music for a nominal additional cost, while bands/musicians can cost quite a bit more.   Also, Bands often have multiple members who all come with many pieces of equipment that can take up quite a bit of space. The musicians may have several amps or instruments that require electrical outlets to be available while a DJ requires only 1 outlet. Also, many musicians play by reading sheet music which means between songs you may have a “gap of silence” while they prepare the next song.  DJ’s come prepared with a full list of music selected by the couple or based on the DJ’s experience and the general wishes of the couple, and there is no gap in the music.  DJs usually only need one speaker and a wireless microphone and laptop (and some backup equipment for emergencies), so they take up very little space and are not a focal point of attention.

Finally, (this one is very important!)  If you hire a musician or band, it is crucial that you hear them play live.  You don’t have to hear a DJ play live, because a DJ is playing pre-recorded music that you know will sound great…as long as the sound system is a good one and the DJ is experienced with performing Ceremonies, but a live musician who provides a “demo” may have polished the recording to perfection but when it comes time to play live, they simply aren't that good.  Ask to see them play live, at least for those key Processional songs you've chosen.  We don’t want to step on any toes; we simply want to caution our potential clients to make certain the musicians they hire are proficient players.

Cocktail Hour/Dinner Music - Band OR DJ?

THE PRO’s:  Again, a band has the look of a classic wedding long before there were DJ’s with CD’s or laptops. Bands create a tangible atmosphere and an interactive experience which people take a mental picture of throughout the day, Bands generally bring a lot of energy to an event, BUT, DJs can also have a wow factor when they run an event flawlessly, can be as interactive as the clients want them to be, especially if they have a great personality, aren't obnoxious or cheesy, and play great music.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND: Bands might have an awesome set list to choose from, but they usually have a limited number of songs and styles they can play. Should you want to change the feel of your cocktail or dinner music on the fly, this may be impossible for them in most cases. And remember, if the band uses sheet music they may have that “gap of silence” between each song that can be very josseling for your guests.  A Great band will have a fixed set of music which they've memorized and prepared for and generally there is little to no gap between songs…but those bands cost a lot more money.  Great bands memorize their music, it’s just that simple.  The good DJs will usually have gone over music with the clients and have arranged a list of songs that fit the couple’s idea for the feel of cocktail and dinner. This music list can include popular hits everyone can sing and tap their toes to, or favorite bands that the couples love. The theme can be changed at any moment using a giant library of music already installed in the DJ’s computer. It will run on a loop and have a fading effect that makes song transitions seamlessly and with no “gap of silence.” By using computers for cocktail and dinner music, this also allows the DJ to be free to help wherever they are needed and talk to the wedding party and the important people involved in the Grand Entrances, Special Dances, Toasts, etc. This is very useful when you’re trying to keep the schedule moving and rely on the DJ to MC the event.  While many bands have Emcee’s who can be working to arrange and execute the schedule while the band continues playing, the less expensive bands are generally not as prepared, experienced or interactive behind the scenes as a professional wedding DJ.

Also, with a band it may be hard to control the volume levels unless they have a professional sound technician with them. Without a sound technician, a guitarist’s amp may be too loud while a singer or trumpet player is getting louder trying to compensate, this isn't ideal.  DJ’s control their sound by walking around during a song and checking levels to make sure the music isn't too loud or is just loud enough…or in some cases, meets the noise ordinance requirements set by a Venue.

Something else to consider: if you are providing vendor meals, with a band you might have many mouths to feed which will increase your catering bill, while a DJ may only be 1 individual or 2 at the most when there is a DJ and Emcee combo.

Dance Music - Band or DJ?

Bands are lively, fun, loud, and energetic…the good ones are, anyway. DJs can be all of those things too.  Really great wedding bands cost anywhere from $4000-15,000 while really Great DJs in the Chicago market can cost anywhere between $700-$1200. These prices are based on location, experience, talent, reputation, number of musicians, and of course, supply and demand. Keeping in mind many DJ’s can cost considerably less and even more. See the Truth about Chicago-Suburbs Wedding DJ Pricing and Types of DJ’s for Weddings.  For the dancing portion of your wedding, you have to ask yourself “do I want all styles of music?” including the latest pop hits, hip-hop, jazz, rock, oldies, etc… and if so, “do I want a band that plays their own rendition of those songs?  Or do I want to hear the Actual Original Recorded version song itself? “That’s what it really boils down to.  Beyond that, keep in mind that DJ’s can act as the Emcee and provide all of the music across tens of thousands of songs plus have internet capability to obtain even more songs, prearranged or on the fly, while bands may have an Emcee, to assure that you're getting a good one, you'll have to pay for it!

It’s important to interview DJs and determine how they will Look, Sound, and “feel” in front of all of your guests.  You can tell if that person has the right personality, experience, and expertise you are looking for to provide the right music and be a great Emcee for your most special day.  With a Band, you need to interview them to determine their Emceeing abilities and just how involved they will be with the execution of the timeline and announcements, and you absolutely need to hear them play live so you know exactly what you’re getting ahead of time.  We’ve actually had people tell us they hired expensive bands for previous events and when they attended a wedding that we DJ-Emceed, they wish they had hired us.  So, just because a band or DJ costs a lot, that may not be a full indication of whether they are really good or fit your desires for a great event.

You can see that there are many reasons why you should or should not hire a band and/or a DJ. Bands are NOT our competition and we love to work together with them side by side, sharing the entertainment responsibilities while we usually act as the Emcee. Its comparing apples to oranges when you really consider everything you get from both types of entertainment. Your decision should be about what will make your night fun, entertaining, stress-free, and an event that you and your guests will never forget. We hope you always make confident choices and consider all the details. We wish you love, happiness, an awesome wedding and a beautiful future. See exactly what we have to offer. What to Expect From Your Disc Jockey

What to Expect From Your Disc Jockey
What you expect when you hire a professional Disc Jockey for your wedding reception.

A professional will have a contract, not just to protect himself but for your protection. When it’s written down there’s no doubt what was said and that leads into the next important part….
The wedding questionnaire. It is so important. It is the script of the flow of the reception.
Keeping in touch with the bride both by personal meetings and by phone. Since wedding plans change over time, contact is important as changes to the wedding questionnaire happen all the time. A wedding is fluid and a professional knows that.

A professional will arrive in plenty of time to set-up, talk to other vendors, and make sure everything is working properly and ready to go when the guests start to arrive. [See note #7] https://www.theoriginalmrdj.com/frequently-asked-questions.html
They are dressed appropriately as requested and have the songs requested by the bride for their special dances. For Weddings, (in Tuxedo).
Does the DJ carry a wide variety of music that spans the decades so your grandparents have some songs that they can enjoy and dance too? https://www.theoriginalmrdj.com/music.html
Has your DJ ever done interactive acts? Or with the guests? https://www.theoriginalmrdj.com/we-can-be-interactive.html

Does your DJ have enough experience to help you with the flow of your reception and have the knowledge to suggest things that will make your reception a reception to remember? How to Talk To A DJ in the World of Texting

How to Talk To A DJ in the World of Texting

Now you’re ready to get your music and entertainment for your wedding and find that DJ and now you are ready to talk to a disc jockey.

OK First you should have some idea as to how you would like your event to go.

1. How are the bridal party and couple going to be announced?
2. Are you going to do any of the traditional wedding dances e.g. Mother...son,
Father...daughter, and of course bride and groom. How about grandparent dance?
3. What kind of budget do you have in mind allocated for music and entertainment?
4. Do you want the Disc Jockey to be interactive or low key or somewhere in between?
5. Will you be doing anything special that the DJ needs to know? Dance routines are the craze now. Just go to You Tube and see what some brides and grooms are doing.
6. Does the DJ have a contract, questionnaire and time lines that they use
7. Do you need a DJ for the ceremony for microphones and music?
8. Is the wedding ceremony at the same place as the reception?
9. Do you have an idea about the types of music you want played and the bigger question what music do you not want played. Will the DJ take requests from your guests and honor your no play list?
10. Will you be doing the bouquet toss, garter toss, dollar dance or some other activity or none of these?

These 10 suggestions should get you thinking and you certainly can come up with more of your own, but just don't first ask, "How much do you charge?" Purchasing a service is not like buying a pair of Levi jeans.

You can call stores and check what Levi jeans cost because 501 is the same in every store so price becomes a factor, not so with DJs. Service and cost can be all over the place. A professional Disc Jockey custom tailor's your event to what it is that you want and can afford.

Price is important but it is not the only thing to consider. One size doesn't fit all. Good luck with that pair of Levi's. Choosing a DJ for A Gay, Lesbian or Biracial Wedding? With the Original Mr. DJ, All Are Welcome!

Choosing a DJ for A Gay or Biracial Wedding?
With the Original Mr. DJ, All Are Welcome!

Today in the “New World” of gender anonymity and marriages without conventional constraints, we try to find new ways to open our business to all that are in love and wish to celebrate. When a gay, lesbian or biracial couple gets engaged, they are met with happy greetings and best wishes from their friends and families. We hope that they find the same happiness and joy from their Wedding Vendors as well.  When it comes to planning a Wedding Celebration, our Chicago Wedding DJs know that few things differ between heterosexual and Same-Sex and (LGBT) Weddings. LGBT couples may face some challenges in the planning and preparation of a wedding that straight couples do not but, the planning process carries on as it would for the traditional husband and wife scenario; the location, invitations, menu selections, floral arrangements, outfits, and, even the DJ.

As a wedding & party service DJ company we don’t have a specific “same-sex” package because every wedding is specific and unique in its own way.

We don’t feel a need to cater to a specialty market. We don’t want to keep with the old ways of pointing out when things are different, but rather, point out when things are special. The music you choose, the ceremony you dreamed of — it’s all part of what a couple has imagined since they first began talking with each other about the possibility of having a wedding.

Gay and Lesbian couples face a lot of the same challenges and excitement that straight couples do.  Biracial couples also receive their share of outside problems too. For example, Gay or Straight, nowadays we ALL love to go on Facebook or other social media sites to post all about the big wedding day.

We disagree about color patterns, budgets, and which vendors to hire. And we all get nervous about walking down the aisle, and argue over which song will be used for the First Dance just as all Married Couples do.  As seasoned, experienced and professional Wedding DJs in Chicago, we recognize some of the differences that are unavoidable, but we also know that, at the end of the day, hiring a DJ for a LGBT, “Same-sex” or biracial wedding celebration is no different than a straight wedding in this regard: The trick to having a great DJ at your event is having someone who sees it as a special day and nothing out of the norm.  It’s a wedding and that’s that.

The vows may be a little different and you may have two Father/Daughter dances or a Mother/Daughter or Father/Son dance, or some other special highlight that doesn’t always show up in a typical Male-Female “Straight” Wedding.  The music and Emceeing should still be executed professionally just as they would for any event.  Here at the Original Mr. DJ, it’s our job as the DJ to help you plan those announcements, to realize your vision for the perfect music for each portion of the event, and to execute it to perfection.

There are some unique decisions and concerns that same-sex couples may face during their planning, for example, straight couples may worry about the look of their outfits, but it’s not because they’re worried about their gender identity being misunderstood.  Some LGBT couples might be concerned that the family members or wedding party members use the correct pronoun when mentioning them in a toast.

Those factors are common, but it’s the responsibility of the Original Mr. DJ Emcee to make sure those issues are dealt with before the wedding day arrives, we understand your wishes and executes them. Whether you’re Jewish and you bless the Challah, or you’re Chinese and you change into a ceremonial dress mid-wedding, your DJ should be professional and adaptable, even if he/she has never worked for a wedding that has your particular unique concerns.

You want your DJ to understand these points and to incorporate them into the event just as he/she would any event… but not go over overboard and feel manufactured or to make you feel uncomfortable by his/her overly enthusiastic approach to a Gay Wedding, as if it were something so out of the ordinary that the DJ needs to bring special attention to it.  Our DJs simply don’t feel that way.

We are here to make your moment with your best friend, your partner and your fiancĂ© the most special day that it can be.  We recognize the historical significance of the recent freedoms and progress gained within the Gay Community, but we never want our clients to feel singled out, or that their DJ is uncomfortable or unfamiliar with Gay wedding celebrations.

Long before same sex marriage was “Legal” in any state, we have been called upon to provide music and entertainment for the celebration of same-sex unions.  The future is always moving. Lifestyles are changing, families are no longer the stereotypical “TV family”, or “colored people” and weddings will continue to evolve, even beyond what we know them as today.

For our Wedding DJ services, little has changed, and we want our customers to know that we are completely open and accepting of our same-sex couples and clients. The Original Mr. DJ don’t see people as categories, rather, we see two people sharing a night of love, family, food, drinks, and of course, dancing!

We wish all the best to every happy couple pledging endless love to their soul mates!

When planning your Wedding, IT”S A CELEBRATION!

Remember this #1 Rule when planning your Wedding, IT”S A CELEBRATION!

So, Don't overthink it. If you allow the planning of your wedding to stress you out or ruin the process, you don’t need to be having a wedding.

Allow yourself to be in the moment, to enjoy the process, to leave behind the things you don't need, to accept the things you cannot control or change, and to have fun! It’s Your Wedding, don't allow relatives or friends to have too much influence, such that it takes away the “you” part of your wedding.

You NEED a Venue, Food, Alcohol, Entertainment, a Minister/Rabbi/Officiant, Photographer, and some flowers, and you should strongly consider a Wedding Coordinator, A creative designer/florist, a videographer, and a cake/dessert baker. Beyond that, there are things you might want, which will make the event more fun and memorable, but start with the things you know you need and get that part under control.

If you're a busy/highly successful person, you should hire someone (a Professional Wedding Planner) to help you design the decor and timelines and to help hire the vendors, but you probably already know that if you're a highly successful person. Finally, the entertainment, (which we {The Original Mr. DJ} are biased about) is crucial to the “memorable” and “Fun” factor, so choose wisely.
